Last month, DelMoPRO was hired to do all the safety and scoring for the Around the Cape Paddle.
While at Around the Cape Paddle, I was fortunate enough to run into some old friends, friends I haven't seen in a few years. After catching up on a few items, my buddy said the following statement, "Your kids are the clock in the room, you better take your time now." That sh*t hit me square in the head. Our kids are the clock in the room and that clock is ticking every second of every day. For some of you, this means absolutely nothing, for others, it hits home... hard. As I progress through my evolution of a family man I realize time is fleeting and I am super critical of how my time is spent. You should be too. You don't have to have kids to realize time is ticking. You simply have to know every new moment is a gift... so easy to say, so hard to recognize in the moment.
Triathlon and endurance sports can teach us many things, but they can also take us away from our loved ones for long periods of time. Training rides, swims, runs, recon trips for different races, club functions, planning, and COUNTLESS hours of searching for products, tips, races, and the next and best thing online to shave precious seconds. My advice to you: make certain you are balancing the scales of attention with the things that REALLY matter. We play triathlon, but we live and love and work in real life.
That's all I got. The older I get, the less impressed I am with podiums and the more impressed I am with the person who barely makes it to the starting line. For some reason, I feel like that person had to go through so much more to just show up. Yeah, I know what it takes to win a race, but I feel like a newbie on how to win at life. There was a time when I placed so much time and energy on 'winning' a race only to look back and to think, "For what?" What if I spent that time on "winning" and being better in other areas? Some deep stuff, right? Were you expecting to hear about the latest and greatest DelMoSports event? Haha... welcome to the club! You're going to get the full package from us scars and all, every time.
Take this newsletter how you want. I still have my goals, and I still have my disciplines, but there is a clock in the room and it's different for us all and I'm going to make the most of the time I've got.
