This year we will have a legendary athlete doing Escape The Cape for the VERY FIRST TIME! Betsy Tootell, age 70, has done 4 full Ironman, numerous halfs, and too many shorter distance events to count. Betsy started doing triathlon at age 60. Betsy is a role model, a count of knowledge, and supportive to newer athletes. Some call her their, “Tri-dol."
1. Tell us 3 things we should know about you.
A: 1.) After teaching elementary school for 34 years and raising 5 children..
2.) I retired, hired a triathlon coach and began to pursue my dream of becoming a athlete. 2.) Did my 1st full IM at age 60 reaching the podium. Since then I have done 3 more fulls (140.6) and 22 halves (70.3)
3.) I have 11 grandchildren.
2. When and how did you begin your triathlon journey?
A: I began my triathlon journey 2012 while spectating. My sons are all Ironmen and I watched and learned from them.
3. What do you love most about triathlon?
A: I love the challenge of having to train in all 3 ... I feel it has kept my body conditioned and healthy.
4. What is your race mantra for 2024?
A: My race mantra for 2024 is to, finally, take it easier, have more fun, do smaller races... I have reached so many goals in my 60's that I feel just showing up at the start line with so many familiar faces is enough now that I am 70. I still work with my coach, Bruce Clayton... so I am maintaining my fitness.
5. What is one piece of advice you have for anyone looking to get involved in triathlon?
A: My advice is to enjoy the sport and have fun. Try not to put too much pressure on yourself. Even if you hire a coach (which I highly recommend)- you can still make the training fun by training with friends and teammates.
6. What made you want to sign up for Escape the Cape Triathlon?
A: I registered for Escape the Cape for the challenge of jumping off the ferry. I have put it off since it started, but now is the time! Plus, DelMo Sports puts on such a terrific event. I did Womens Philly Tri last year and had a blast (I am back this year) I am looking forward to high-5ing friends and my best sherpa (my husband) at the finish.
7. Favorite race memory?
A: My 1st IM (Florida) 2013 My family all flew down to FL to spectate and getting great advice and support form those IM sons! Lake Placid IM 2017- never thought I would be able to do it!- I did and 7 grandchildren were at the final turn into the Olympic Stadium cheering me on. IM Races with sons and also the Boston Marathon when I was 65.
We could not be more excited to see Betsy on the boat at the 11th Annual DeSatnick Real Estate Escape the Cape Triathlon!
