It has not all been what you think.
This is year 20 for DelMoSports. Yup. I said that. 20 years of learning. 20 years of growing. 20 years of challenges. 20 years of finish lines. 20 years of figuring it out. There have been some amazing vistas (Escape the Cape, IRONMAN 70.3 Atlantic City, Women's PHL Tri), yet 20 years of experiencing very low valleys too (Challenge Atlantic City, Escape To Lewes, Doo Wop Duathlon). I've experienced death. I've stayed up late at night wondering how I'm going to get through a pandemic, natural disasters, and being stabbed in the back. I've said yes to things I didn't really want to do. I've passed on things I always wanted to do. I've hired some amazing people and I've let go of people along the way. I've questioned my ability to lead as well as be a committed husband and family man. Yes, I have experienced all these things and they have permeated my head and heart. I've watched the man in the mirror looking back grow grayer, wrinkled, and gain a few pounds. But that same man (and his amazing wife) has endured, and sits with a quiet satisfaction on developing a culture of hard work, success, smiles and feel-good vibes that only a DelMo event can provide. I have seen and done things you can only learn by living in this life and I wouldn't have it any other way.
Yes, 2023 marks the 20th year in the events world and it's not all been what you think... it's even better. I can look back and know I took my shot and I'm going to take SEVERAL more, but now... I have 20 years of experience making those decisions. Like any teacher, doctor, mechanic, or carpenter with 20 years' experience... I'm a PRO.
So, you're starting out and need some advice?
Here's my top 5 on how to get to 20 years of doing anything:
- Do it because you love it, not because someone suggested it.
- You can handle it. Never, ever, ever give up. It's the only reason I'm still here.
- Operate from integrity, not expediency, always. Do The Right Thing All The Time Every Time.
- Make quick decisions and move on. If you're right, great. If you're not, you've learned.
- Own It. The faster you take responsibility for everything in your life the clearer your path will be.
It's not rocket science people. It's life. Now, go live it... and love it.
See you on a starting line.
love, delmo
