“Whoa Whoa Whoa….whaaaat are you talking about DelMo. I’m 43 and just starting this triath-a-lon thing.”
“Whoa Whoa Whoa….whaaaat are you talking about DelMo. I’m 43 and just starting this triath-a-lon thing.”
Yeah. I know. Gimme a second. I’ll explain.
I’ve read hundreds of books on peak performance and my #1 All Time Favorite has nothing to do with athletics and everything to do with Turning Pro. The book is called The War of Art by Steven Pressfield. I believe this book was created for me, personally, and created for the amazing athletes of DelMoSports. Do yourself a favor, read it.
Turning Pro has nothing to do with being an elite triathlete. You don’t have to develop the endurance of USAT Olympian Joe Maloy (From Wildwood Crest, NJ) in order to Turn Pro. You do not need the best bike, the latest tech, or the coolest tri gear to Turn Pro. You don’t have to race the Ironman World Championships, Escape From Alcatraz, or the Norseman Xtreme Triathlon to Turn Pro. Nope, none of that matters.
Here’s what matters:
You need to think about what you REALLY want out of this thing called triathlon. For some, you want to lose 10lbs. For others you want to be on the podium at Ironman 70.3 Atlantic City or the Escape the Cape Triathlon. But let’s be honest, most of you are doing this because someone asked you to give it a shot. Whatever the reason for signing up and spending a day with us there is a formula for success.
You need to write down your goals. You need to create a plan… and you need to get out of bed in the morning and take action. Every. Single. Day. That’s the secret formula. That’s Turning Pro.
If you’ve been inactive for 10 years and now you’re taking walks every morning…you’re Turning Pro. If you’ve always SUCKED at swimming and are now going to the pool 3x per week so you can conquer the waves at Tri the Wildwoods… you’re Turning Pro. If you think changing a flat tire is astrophysics but are now studying YouTube videos to learn in case you get a flat at the USAT Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships at Atlantic City Triathlon… congrats, you’re Turning Pro. Do you understand now? Turn Pro is about taking specific action to get a specific outcome. That’s it.
Here’s the real beauty. You can pick up the phone and call your mom. You can surprise your kid and pick them up from school. You can write your significant other a daily love note. That’s Turning Pro too. That’s going to leave a mark. That’s going to help you build a better relationship… but that’s only a start… you must continue onto the next action, and the next, and the next. Rest easy… momentum will be at your back. You’ll have been building the new muscle to do these things when you don’t feel like it… because you’re Turning Pro.
That’s how you get better in triathlon, in work, in life.
Whatever it is you want in triathlon (aka LIFE) you’re going to have to Turn Pro.
This is your year.
